This week we had school from August 28th through the 31th and I feel like it just rushed by! I continued to prompt students to remember their Parental Permission Forms. Currently, I have 5 students who still need to return their form and 17 completed. Of the 17 completed 2 have chosen to not have data collected. On Friday I had 3 of the 5 students who have not returned their form asked me to help them remember to get their form home by sending an email reminder. I am always amazing at the domino affect of students one asks and then more go in! One aspect of numbers I reflected on this week was at the amount of students I had join the class last minute. The class was originally 18 students and is now up to 22, a portion of the forms that have not been returned are from the new additions, including another interesting student who was based with her family in Germany and have now move to the area. However, August 31st was the last day to request a schedule change so I believe my number should now stay at a total of 22.
Throughout the week students continued to add to and make adjustments to their Visual Journal Covers and on Wednesday I introduced their first Visual Journal Prompt of Identity! There was a list provided to help generate ideas of how to display their identity and I also went over the requirements of creation which included the use of direct observational drawing, collage, and text. I feel that I was successful this last week in using my time from 11:45 - 12 for housekeeping, notes, and organizing documents for my research. Hopefully I will be able to keep that up. Overall though I have let this last week be a welcome back and relationship building time with my students. I did my best to learn something new about each of them and especially the handful of new students to the district. This week I was also approached by our schools Teacher Leader about assisting with homecoming advertising/decorations for this year with one of my classes (I had said yes last year to the idea) and I am hoping that it will not interfere with my research but that it will be a good review and practice of design elements and principles. Currently with the amount of parental forms I am on the fence on if I should jump into my first BIG project that implements the modified curriculum or if I should allow them to explore working in their Visual Journals more. I have a feeling that this year is going to fly by like never before!
